Seeing Your San Diego Eye Doctor
It's important to see your San Diego eye doctor for routine eye exams as part of your regular health maintenance. During an eye exam, your San Diego optometrist or ophthalmologist can detect vision problems, eye disease and general health problems. This is equally important for children who need vision correction, as vision can influence academic achievement.
The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that children have an eye exam by 6 months of age, and again at 3 years of age. Generally people ages 6 to 60 should have eye exams every two years, according to the AOA. Both adults and children who wear glasses or contact lenses, as well as all adults over 60, should see their San Diego eye doctor annually. Of course, your eye doctor may recommend a different frequency based on your individual vision needs.
In San Diego County, approximately 800 registered San Diego optometrists are listed on the California State Board of Optometrists website. Three hundred are located in the city of San Diego.
